Grounding myself

I was holding onto an idea but uncertain if I should. It was good to read that you begin with something familiar. I was actually thinking about how I would like to hold onto the notions of 'body, space, time and relation' from my past drawings but am not sure how they might fit in in a new context. I think they might fit well with what you have said but I need it all to grow organically.
I also see that my ideas are too abstract to get started on something - rocks really ground me - I like that idea as a beginning.
I will think more.

Rocks

I have been thinking of rocks. Rocks that make up walls, cobble stone paths and roads. I plan to track (trace, outline, surround) around the shape of a rock with the gauze. Shilpa who I met at a book launch has some gauze (which I haven’t seen) she would like to send to me. I am asking her to send it to DRAWinternational so it will be there for our arrival. I will use this gauze for the tracing. Then I will draw the rock. Get to know it well. Contemplate the shape, the function, it’s relationship with all those around it, the part it plays in the structure, how it feels, where it came from, who laid it. I will make calligraphy type images of the rock . I plan that this will be my first self directed work.
In other residences I brought with me an idea that is related to my previous work that I can explore as soon as I arrive. It helps me focus, the choice is limited and I am not so overwhelmed by a new world (even in a residency in the city I grew up in). I know it is possible and achievable.
The DRAWinternational residency is different to all other I have done because of the aspect of collaboration. I have always worked by myself in previous residencies. I have been interested in collaborative work after a residency at the Gunnery in Sydney where I met Lucy HG a new media artist from LA who worked collaboratively. I began to explore ways of collaborative work. I began working collaboratively with Lisa Roberts. Movement, physical response to language, information and memory were recorded by drawing, recording and photographs as part of this work.
The gauze links us to past work, Symmetrical Planting and the workshops with 4 and 5 year olds from NEGS. We worked collaboratively on developing the learning
experiences for the NGES children.
I am very aware that DRAWinternational will help set up our way of working together.
We could use the rock work as a beginning. I am visualising ways of working together with the spirit of reciprocity. I can see short fast drawings of the tracking of the rock with the gauze. I can see myself taking on the characteristics of the rock physically in preparation for the calligraphy type response. I can see both taking on that physical response and drawing memories of that response. Video and still image. Drawing a moving person.
I get the feeling that the structure of the days will evolve in collaboration with Grete and John. Or I hope that is how it works. I think that John’s role in this could relate to breaking old habits, building new experiences and challenging preconceived ideas. An agent for new direction.
